First Friendships
~
After 7 months of working with the company I work for, my best friend left his position and decided to take some time off to sort out his priorities or goals perhaps. It’s a bit jarring actually, especially that when he came to the company, I felt like I was in high school all over again. People tend to feel indestructible when they got their closest friends around. And on some level, I felt secure.
When I asked my youngest sister (who’s starting high school this year) if she has a bestfriend already, she replied “not yet”. Friends and relatives would always say we’re very much alike and I couldn’t agree more. Contrary to popular belief, I was always a loner. Not that I think it’s a bad thing. Ever since I was young, I just preferred to do things alone. When I spent 3rd grade in the province, I never once had lunch with anyone on my class. I would pack up my food and go to the high school court and eat my lunch watching high-schoolers as they practiced basketball, volleyball and even their plays. I remember I won a best actor award a few years later because of the acting styles I learned while I watched rehearsals.
I met my first closest set of friends when I was in 4th grade, that's when I came back to study in Manila. Our teacher then made me transfer to the first row, left corner seat. Beside me was Ray, behind him was Merlin and behind me was Stephanie. Since then, I never had lunch alone anymore. Ray, Merlin and I would go straight to the library during break hours and entertained ourselves reading Tin-Tin, Asterix and Obelix, Reader’s Digest back copies, books with big pictures of dinosaurs and the newest origami books. Although I really thought she was rather pretty, Stephanie was one of the boys. She punched harder than the three of us combined and would join in on the usually boy dominated sports.
Ever since I could remember, I was doing drawings of just about everything. But that little hobby wouldn’t have grown to a burning passion for the arts if it wasn’t for Merlin. He introduced to the world of Marvel Comics and the X-men which he drew with explicit detail on his notebooks. When I was in junior high, he basically taught me how to play the guitar. My knowledge in music and art combined eventually landed me my first job.
I don’t know what Merlin is thinking of at this moment. I’ve decided not to intrude on his decisions in life. He knows anyway that whatever he goes for, I’m just here behind him.
