Fish – Part Deux

~

I love the Holy Week. Who doesn’t? It’s an opportunity for a long and lazy weekend vacation. If there’s one thing I hate about it, it’s fasting. I don’t even mind that the malls are closed; it’s only a matter of time before mall owners totally ignore the tradition. Anyway, Catholics are raised so that when they come past a certain age, they are to abstain from eating meat during Fridays (although I think it was cleared up that it’s just on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday that fasting should be practiced). Nevertheless, due to decades of tradition, Catholics stayed away from meat – pork, chicken, beef and other innocent exotic mammals Filipinos love to chow – during the Lenten Season. I’m not really subscribing to it though. It’s not in the Ten Commandments. Period.

Why meat? How about non-meat eaters? How do they fast? Aren’t they supposed to be prohibited from eating fish or vegetables and be forced to eat pork for the season? If not, then they can’t be considered practicing fasting right?

And what is it with pigs and chickens being unclean and all? I’m guessing that’s the reason they got “banned” on the dining tables during holy week. Aren’t fishes just swimming on their own piss and shit – and ours as well? Doesn’t studies show that bacterial growth is 85% faster in wet areas? Isn’t that some kind of animal discrimination? Somebody should call animal rights movements!

hahaha! what a crazy post! =P now you got me thinking about NOT having fish for dinner. i had images, damn! *ulk*

btw, i think it was called abstinence... when you shouldn't eat meat on lenten Fridays? Fasting is more like eating only 1 full meal a day. like starvation diet of overly-conscious women.

btw, Jews have a way of preparing "clean" food, called Kosher. they let all the blood drain from the meat, so it's basically "clean".
